Angie Mills – Vocalist
Angie was born in Maidstone, Kent and currently lives in Portsmouth with husband Chris (Dean), and son Oliver. Her first experiences as a vocalist came during her school days with the Millstones Big Band and in several other Big Bands and local Jazz groups. On leaving school Angie moved to London and took a job as a dresser at the Royal Opera House. After this she went on to work in the wardrobe department on the farce “When Did You Last See Your Trousers?” and the Musical “Follies”. In 1993 Angie landed a job as Junior Graphic Designer with a firm in Brighton. A month later she was promoted to Head of Graphic Design and remained in this post for a further 8 years.
It was while working in graphic design that Angie established her reputation as a singer, regularly appearing at jazz venues such as the Cabaret Room at the Pizza on the Park, the Royal Festival Hall and the National Theatre performing her cabaret shows “Bebop and Beyond”, “True Love and Other Fables”. She has also appeared at Jazz festivals around the country either as a guest artist or with her own acclaimed quartet, Roy Hilton, Dave Green, Clark Tracey and Dave Cliff with whom she recorded her debut album in 2000. It was Matthew Ford who heard Angie performing at a venue in Eastbourne and suggested she contact Chris Dean regarding the vacancy for a female singer with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra. Following an audition with the band at Wellingborough, Angie joined in August 2002.
In addition to her work with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra, Angie continues to perform up and down the country with her own Quartet and still finds time to use her Graphic Design expertise to produce Publicity materials for the Orchestra.
